What the parts are called in Germany
A German IBAN is the old pair of numbers with DE and two check digits in front: the 8-digit Bankleitzahl (BLZ) and the Kontonummer, filled with zeros on the left to 10 digits.
The BLZ names the bank, not the branch. The Bundesbank publishes the full list four times a year; the current file is valid September 7, 2026 – December 6, 2026 and has 3,507 bank codes. Look one up on the bank code page (German).
A few banks convert account numbers by their own “IBAN rules” (for example sub-account digits). The Bundesbank gives that list only to registered companies, so our calculator marks German results as calculated by the standard rule.
The check digits of DE89 3704 0044 0532 0130 00
- Move the first four characters to the end: 370400440532013000DE89
- Replace each letter by a number (A = 10, B = 11 … Z = 35): 370400440532013000131489
- Divide that number by 97. The remainder is 1; a valid IBAN always leaves 1.
- To calculate the check digits instead, put 00 in their place: the remainder is 9, and 98 − 9 = 89.
